Wabash River Tours

The Wabash River Enhancement Corporation invites you on a six mile journey to discover history, culture, recreational opportunities and natural beauty of the mighty Wabash River. Get up close and personal with the heart of our community – the Wabash River.

The Wabash River is an important part of our community. It is readily accessible and provides tremendous opportunities for recreation. The river is intrinsically tied to the history of Tippecanoe County and is the reason that Lafayette and West Lafayette are located here. Our river tours offer a slice of the river’s history within Tippecanoe County. Tours begin at Mascouten Park in West Lafayette and end at Fort Ouiatenon. Under typical flow conditions, tours take about one and one-half hours.

Our history and culture are integrally entwined with the Wabash River. Learn about the origin of the river, the arrival and lives of the Voyageurs, about how the Wabash River shaped the community in which we live and about efforts underway to improve all aspects of the river and its impact on our lives. Wabash River tours occur in two replica fiberglass North Canoes. These 25 foot canoes are modeled after Voyageur Canoes used as part of the fur trade throughout the Midwest. The history of these canoes and of the area will be explained as part of the tour. Each tour can accommodate up to sixteen individuals in two canoes.

Scheduling Your Tour

Tours can be scheduled under any conditions as long as reasonable water conditions, safe river levels and tolerable weather occur. Most tours are scheduled during evenings and weekends as conditions and schedules permit. Tours cost $50 per boat – if your party includes eight or less people we’ll use one boat – for nine to sixteen individuals, we’ll use two boats at a cost of $100. Use our form or contact Gene Hatke to schedule your tour. We will be in contact to confirm your tour date and again two hours prior to the tour to confirm that safe conditions are present in the river.

Tour Logistics

You are responsible for providing vehicles at Fort Ouiatenon for use at the end of the trip. We can assist with transportation to Mascouten Park to begin the tour. All participants must be 18 years of age or accompanied by an adult.
